National Timing Center Fiber Optic Gyroscope Successfully Monitored Ningqiang Earthquake In 85 Seconds

At 19:06:34 on September 12, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred in Hanzhong Ningqiang. The Pucheng gyroscope station of the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully monitored the earthquake 85 seconds after the earthquake. It is reported that this is the first time that the station has detected data on geo-geological activities since its official operation in early September.


The large-scale fiber optic gyroscope (Sagnac interferometer), which plays a central role in this monitoring, is a precision optical measuring instrument jointly developed by the Yun Enxue team of the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Li Zhengbin team of Peking University. Its main task is to accurately measure the world time UT1. It serves the civil and military fields of national timing systems, space applications, and space-time benchmarks. At the same time, it provides powerful and sophisticated measurement methods for geophysics and relativistic physics.


The environment of the large-scale fiber optic gyroscope is demanding. The National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences places the gyroscope at about 30 meters below the underground cavern of the time-granting minister of Pucheng County. The good condition of constant temperature and humidity micro-vibration is gyroscope data measurement. Provides an ideal environment.


As a new world-time UT1 measurement technology, the large-scale fiber optic gyroscope solves the world time UT1 by measuring the instantaneous angular velocity of the Earth's rotation and combining with the Earth's rotation model. Its advantages are high precision, good real-time performance, and its solid state and no motion. Components, which have significant advantages in terms of stability and longevity, are important means to establish a world-wide UT1 system in China.


With the further improvement and upgrade of large-scale fiber optic gyroscopes by the National Time Service Center, it will become a national weapon for basic subjects such as UT1 measurement and geophysical research in the world.
