NASA Says Hubble Space Telescope Is About To Return To Normal Operation

NASA describes the technical repair process as follows:


In order to correct the high rate of errors generated during the operation of the standby gyroscope, the Hubble operations team restarted the gyroscope on October 16. This process turns the gyroscope off for one second and then restarts before its spin speed drops. The purpose of the Hubble operations team is to clear any faults that may occur during the start-up process on October 6, after the gyroscope is turned off for more than 7.5 years. However, the resulting data shows that the performance of the gyroscope has not improved.


On October 18th, the Hubble operations team controlled the Hubble Space Telescope to perform a series of steering maneuvers in an attempt to remove any obstacles that could cause the rotor to deviate from the center and produce a very high rate. During each maneuver, the gyroscope switches from high mode to low mode to remove any blockages that may occur around the rotor.


In this way, the steps to repair the Hubble Space Telescope are no different from the steps to repair the router at home. Try rebooting the device. Shake back and forth. Adjust the settings. If you are lucky, these seemingly meaningless actions will get everything back on track. This method works just like the Hubble Space Telescope. The Hubble operations team said that the problem with the space telescope seems to have been resolved, but a series of additional tests will be conducted before returning it to normal operation.
