Fiber Optic Gyroscope Successfully Monitors Earthquakes In 85 Seconds

The Hanzhong Ningqiang earthquake occurred on the Richter scale of magnitude 5.3. The Pucheng gyroscope station of the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully monitored the earthquake 85 seconds after the earthquake. It is reported that this is the first time that the station has detected data on geo-geological activities since its official operation in early September.

The large-scale fiber optic gyroscope (Sagnac interferometer), which plays a central role in this monitoring, is a precision optical measuring instrument jointly developed by the Yun Enxue team of the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Li Zhengbin team of Peking University. Its main task is to accurately measure the world time UT1. It serves the civil and military fields such as the national timing system, space applications, and space-time benchmarks. At the same time, it provides powerful and precise measurement methods for geophysics and relativistic physics.

The environment of the large-scale fiber optic gyroscope is demanding. The National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences places the gyroscope at about 30 meters underground in the Bocheng Timeline of the Pucheng County. The good condition of the constant temperature and humidity microvibration is the gyroscope data measurement. Provides an ideal environment.
