Classification Of Fiber Optic Gyroscopes

Interferometric fiber optic gyroscope (I-FOG), the first generation of fiber optic gyroscopes, is currently the most widely used. It uses a multi-turn fiber coil to enhance the SAGNAC effect. A dual-beam ring interferometer consisting of multi-turn single-mode fiber coils provides high accuracy and is bound to complicate the overall structure.

The Resonant Fiber Optic Gyroscope (R-FOG) is a second-generation fiber optic gyroscope that uses a ring resonator to enhance the SAGNAC effect and uses loop propagation to improve accuracy, so it can use shorter fibers. R-FOG needs to use a strong coherent light source to enhance the resonant effect of the resonant cavity, but the strong coherent light source also brings many parasitic effects. How to eliminate these parasitic effects is the main technical obstacle at present.

The stimulated Brillouin scattering fiber optic gyroscope (B-FOG), the third generation of fiber optic gyroscopes has improved over the previous two generations, and is still in the theoretical research stage.

According to the structure of the optical system: integrated optical type and all-fiber type fiber optic gyroscope.

By structure: single-axis and multi-axis fiber optic gyroscopes.

According to the loop type: open-loop fiber gyro and closed-loop fiber gyro.
